POSITION OVERVIEW

The Assistant Bakery Manager is responsible for managing all department inventories, production and sales records, in-stock positioning, pricing integrity, merchandising, labor, and all other operational processes to company standards in order to maximize sales and gross profit. This position ensures all department associates receive proper training and supervision to keep turnover to a minimum. This individual will ensure correct ordering, receiving, unloading, storage, and rotation of merchandise and building of displays.

Responsible for working closely with the Owners, Bakery Manger and all Bakery staff to ensure the success of The Market in the Square and Bakery Department through excellent communication, customer service, and a demonstrated passion for the business.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Provide excellent customer service by assisting customers and responding to any complaints in a professional manner

· Maintains an awareness of the demographics of customers in relation to the types of products offered to increase revenues

· Stays up to date on Bakery needs that arise daily, and special circumstances for holidays

· Develops and implements localized merchandising plan(s) for the department, creates and sets-up

attractive/meaningful displays for existing items, seasonal items and cross-department promotions

· Works with Bakery Manager to develop and implement initiatives to help meet the financial objectives of the store

· Identifies areas in the Bakery Department where improvement is required, and implements changes and procedures to address these needs

· Maintains an inventory that is seasonally relevant, appetizing and visually attractive

· Recognizes and responds to trends in the industry

· Ensures accurate and timely ordering, production level, and rotation to prevent product loss

· Manages department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports and orders product and supplies to meet customer needs and the company’s gross profit goals

· Prepares, maintains, and tracks inventories to calculate gross weekly profits according to company guidelines

· Follows departmental procedures for receiving merchandise including inspecting the product when delivered, pricing the product, and restocking cases to insure freshness and quality, accuracy and product rotation

· Creates and maintains a budget and profit planner

· Controls department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, by controlling labor costs and by reducing losses due to shrinkage and pilferage

· Schedules Bakery Department employees and oversees and assists with their training

· Rewards and recognizes staff performance and delegates their work assignments to effectively utilize their talents and abilities

· Maintains accurate records on all important matters, including staff performance, corrective action, sales plans, etc.

· Maintains effective housekeeping program

· Keeps merchandise clean and fresh to meet all health department regulations, pass sanitation inspections and meet company standards

· Ensure that Bakery Department employees always work and operate equipment in a safe manner, complying with OSHA requirements; enforces safety, health, and security rules

· Ensures compliance with local, state, and government weights and measures laws

· Adheres to proper food-handling and storage procedures to eliminate cross-contamination risks

· Performs duties of staff as needed and other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Knowledge of perishables/Bakery is required

· Knowledge of state and federal health/labeling regulations

· Experience and knowledge with USDA regulations, COOL rules, and OSHA standards

· Excellent communication and leadership skills; team building, leading by example, hands-on approach, training, clear expectations, and follow-up with staff

· Basic math skills for ordering and inventory, and to measure and weigh products for production purposes; must have the ability to calculate costs for batches and units to determine proper retail pricing

· Strong multi-tasking and problem-solving skills

· Must be highly motivated with a sense of urgency and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment at all times with all levels of employees and minimum supervision

· Strong interpersonal skills; open door policy with staff, build relationships with vendors and customers, and handle disciplinary actions with professionalism

· Strong organizational skills

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

· High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 2-3 years experience working in a grocery-

retail setting with a high-volume baking and production operation; previous management experience in the retail, grocery, bakery or restaurant industry preferred

· Experience executing goals, effectively creating change, and increasing efficiencies

· Appropriate food handler’s certification

  • Repetitive arm and hand movements; bending, carrying, and lifting
  • Requires transferring product either horizontally or vertically of up to 30 pounds
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required; flexible store assignments and hours
